WATERBURY — Four members of the Vermont State Police embarked on a mission to North Carolina on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to assist with recovery efforts following the destructive Hurricane Helene.

Lt. Thomas Mozzer, Sgt. Christian Hunt and his K-9 partner Loki, along with Troopers Clay Knight and Zachary Trocki, departed at approximately 4 a.m. for the 14-hour drive to Newton, North Carolina.

Their primary role will be to bolster local law enforcement efforts by enhancing safety and security for the affected communities.

This interstate aid comes as a result of North Carolina Emergency Management’s request through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, an agreement that facilitates cooperation and resource sharing among states during emergencies.

VSP director Col. Matthew T. Birmingham expressed his support for the deployment, “As soon as North Carolina asked for help, the Vermont State Police was honored to answer the call. I’m proud of these four troopers for volunteering for this mission. Their presence will provide an important addition to the influx of local, state and federal resources coming together for the people of North Carolina in this time of need.”
