Seymour man arrested for kidnapping and sexual assault of minor

WATERBURY — Waterbury Police Department officers responded to a report of a kidnapping and sexual assault involving a minor at approximately 7 p.m. on Oct. 9, near Fulton Park on Cooke Street.

Michael Dewitt, 45, of Seymour, already sought by the New Haven Police Department for a previous sexual assault case involving a minor, was arrested on Oct. 11.

A recent warrant had been issued for his arrest in connection with the New Haven incident.

Following his arrest by New Haven authorities, Dewitt now faces additional charges brought by Waterbury police.

Waterbury’s Major Crimes and Special Victims Unit investigators obtained an active arrest warrant for Dewitt, setting his bond at $1.25 million.

He is being arraigned in New Haven today and is scheduled for arraignment in Waterbury on Oct. 16.

Authorities commend the cooperative efforts of the New Haven Police Department, Waterbury Police Department, Major Crimes Unit, and Special Victims Unit in apprehending the suspect.

Police are urging anyone with further information regarding Michael Dewitt to contact their local police department.
