Williamstown man presumed drowned after kayak overturns in Rood Pond

WILLIAMSTOWN — The Vermont State Police are investigating a presumed drowning of Steven Jones, 30, from Brookfield, after his kayak capsized in Rood Pond on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities were alerted to the incident around 5:35 p.m. when witnesses reported hearing yelling and sighting the overturned kayak.

Jones, who had reportedly gone duck hunting, was last seen at the pond before the accident.

Despite being dressed in warm clothing, he was not wearing a life vest.

Search efforts on Monday morning led to the recovery of a body, believed to be that of Jones, by the Vermont State Police Underwater Recovery Team.

The discovery was made at approximately 11 a.m. The remains have been transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for identity confirmation and an autopsy to ascertain the exact cause and manner of death.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.
