FREETOWN — A 23-year-old Assonet man was arrested Friday on charges including rape, following a collaborative investigation between Massachusetts State Police and Freetown detectives.

Brendan D. Nunes was taken into custody by the Freetown Police Department on Oct. 11 after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Nunes is accused of several offenses, which in addition to rape, include drugging for sexual intercourse, strangulation/suffocation, intimidation of a witness, and three counts of assault and battery.

Massachusetts State Police Troop D Detectives, working alongside Freetown Detectives Shane Kelley and Christopher Medeiros, conducted the investigation leading to Nunes’ arrest.

He was apprehended without incident and has been transported to the Bristol County House of Corrections, where he is currently held on $50,000 cash bail.

Nunes is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday at the Fall River District Court.

“Our officers, working closely with the Massachusetts State Police, demonstrated strong investigative work that led to this arrest,” Freetown Police Chief Scott M.

Rose stated. “This case reflects our commitment to thoroughly investigating serious crimes and holding offenders accountable.”

The Freetown Police Department has not released further details about the investigation at this time.
