1 min read

KENNEBUNK — The Kennebunk Police Department’s K-9 unit played a pivotal role in a York County investigation on Oct. 1, locating a handgun believed to be associated with a recent shooting incident.

At around 6 p.m., the York County Sheriff’s Office enlisted the help of Officer Kevin Rooney and his K-9 partner, Aex, to search for a discarded firearm on Jim Grant Road in Lebanon.

The search followed a suspected shooting earlier in the day.

Officer Rooney and Aex, a 22-month-old Dutch Shepherd/German Shepherd mix from Poland, quickly responded to the call for assistance.

Working in a wooded area per the directives of the York County detectives, the team initiated their evidence search.

After a brief period, Aex successfully detected and indicated the position of the 9mm handgun concealed in the underbrush.

This discovery aids the ongoing investigation and highlights the effectiveness of the K-9 unit in police operations.

Officer Rooney and K-9 Aex have been partners since graduating from the 38th Maine State Police Patrol School on June 5.
