OGUNQUIT — Early Monday morning, the tranquil atmosphere of a coastal Maine inn was shattered by gunfire, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement agencies.
At approximately 3:50 a.m., the Wells Emergency Dispatch Center received reports of shots fired at the Hideaway Inn, located at 67 Main Street.
Officers from the Ogunquit Police Department, alongside their counterparts from Wells and York, rushed to the site of the disturbance.
Upon arrival, authorities encountered several individuals outside the inn who immediately retreated indoors at the sight of the officers.
Efforts were made to communicate with those inside, but initial attempts were met with silence, as no responses were given to phone calls or verbal commands.
The Southern Maine Response Team was subsequently called to the scene to assist with the developing situation.
Area residents were advised to remain in their homes and steer clear of the area for their safety while the investigation unfolded.
In a turn of events that culminated in a peaceful resolution, police negotiators eventually made contact with the individuals inside the inn.
A search of the premises led to the confiscation of two handguns, one rifle, and several shell casings.
The Ogunquit Police Department reported no injuries in connection with the incident.
Chief John Lizanecz issued a statement assuring the public that there is no continuing threat related to this occurrence.
Nonetheless, the incident remains under active inquiry.
