AVON — A 10th-grade Avon High School student is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle and carried for over four miles on its roof, Avon Police reported.
The hit-and-run incident began around 9:16 p.m. on Oct. 4, when the Avon Police Department received a call about debris on Arch Road near Security Drive.
Officers found a damaged bicycle, candy, and a cell phone but no victim at the scene.
Subsequently, a call led police to an injured juvenile by the road at 73 Harris Road.
The juvenile was identified as the victim from the Arch Road collision.
Witnesses and two Good Samaritans provided crucial details, leading to the identification and arrest of Alex Joel Rivera, the alleged driver of a red Subaru Forester involved in the incident.
Rivera allegedly pushed the injured juvenile off his vehicle’s roof before fleeing.
Rivera is charged with multiple offenses, including reckless endangerment, evading responsibility with serious physical injury, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and risk of injury to a child.
He is being arraigned at Hartford Superior Court today.
The police have commended the Good Samaritans for their aid to the juvenile, who is now being treated at Hartford Hospital.
The North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction team is conducting an investigation into the accident.
