Thomaston police issue scam alert over fake financial institution calls

1 min read

THOMASTON — The Thomaston Police Department has issued a scam alert to residents following reports of fraudulent calls from individuals posing as financial institutions to verify transactions.

According to police, scammers are contacting potential victims with claims of large-dollar transactions that require immediate verification.

The intent is to create panic, prompting individuals to click on a link that could lead to compromised bank accounts and significant frustration.

Officials have identified two red flags in the recent scam attempts: the financial institution mentioned is not the one with which the victims have accounts, and the link provided does not belong to any legitimate financial entity.

In the latest incidents, the scammers falsely represented themselves as Camden National, a reputable bank not involved in the fraudulent activity.

The Thomaston Police Department advises anyone who receives such calls to avoid clicking on any links and to directly verify any transaction information by calling the number on the back of their debit or credit card.

They urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
