New Bedford shooting suspect arrested, handgun seized

NEW BEDFORD — Detectives have arrested a man in connection with a shooting at the Blue Meadows Housing Development and confiscated a handgun, police said.

The shooting, which occurred on Sept. 24, left two victims injured.

Following an investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Tyrell Pratt, 20, of New Bedford.

Pratt was spotted by detectives on Oct. 1 around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Cottage St. and Durfee St. As detectives approached, Pratt reached into his waistband and fled toward Austin St., with a firearm in hand.

He threw the gun over a fence before being apprehended by Detectives Matthew Sylvia and Alan Kubik.

The recovered Glock 30 handgun had a defaced serial number and was loaded with a magazine containing nine .45 caliber cartridges.

Pratt was also found in possession of a Percocet tablet during booking.

Facing multiple charges related to the shooting and his arrest, Pratt’s charges include assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, and carrying a loaded firearm with a defaced serial number, among others.

At the time of his arrest, Pratt was on probation from New Bedford District Court.
