NORFOLK — Massachusetts Department of Correction officials are on an active search for Kevin O’Brien, a 72-year-old inmate who disappeared from the Pondville Correctional Center on Tuesday morning.

O’Brien, housed at the minimum/pre-release facility, was last seen on the property at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 1.

A routine check at 11 a.m. revealed that he had not returned as expected.

Subsequent review of security footage showed O’Brien leaving the track area of the prison and entering the nearby woods at around 10 a.m.

The inmate was wearing dark blue jeans, a crewneck sweatshirt, a navy-blue windbreaker, and a navy blue ballcap at the time of his disappearance.

Known for his thick, large black glasses and possibly wearing clear headphones, O’Brien is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing around 160 pounds, with blue eyes, partly bald, and white hair.

Currently serving a sentence for theft of a motor vehicle, O’Brien’s absence prompted the DOC to notify local police departments and the Massachusetts State Police.

DOC investigators, along with K-9 units and drones, have been deployed in the search effort.

Authorities urge the public not to approach O’Brien and to call 911 with any information that could assist in locating him.
