Newington police apprehend juveniles after car accident, attempted carjacking

NEWINGTON — Two juveniles were taken into custody Sunday evening after allegedly pushing a stolen vehicle into a building and attempting a carjacking in a nearby city, authorities said.

The Newington Police Department responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident at approximately 5:21 p.m. near Carr Avenue and John Street, where they found an unoccupied stolen vehicle that had been forced through a fence and into a commercial structure.

The suspects, described as juveniles, had fled the scene on foot.

During the initial investigation, a Newington officer was approached by an individual claiming two juveniles on a scooter had just tried to carjack him in New Britain.

The victim pointed out the suspects, who were still in the vicinity.

Officers were able to locate and apprehend the suspected juveniles without incident.

One was charged with interfering with an officer, engaging in a police pursuit, and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

The other juvenile was also charged with interfering with an officer.

Both were released to their legal guardians following the charges.

The Newington Police Department is continuing to investigate the initial motor vehicle accident.

The attempted carjacking incident has been turned over to the New Britain Police Department for further investigation.
