WEBSTER — A Providence man wanted on multiple warrants was arrested Wednesday after trying to cash a fraudulent check and leading police on a foot chase.
At about 3:56 p.m., officers from Webster Police Department were dispatched to Webster Five Savings Bank on Thompson Road following a report of a man attempting to cash a fraudulent check.
The suspect was identified as Shamiel Perry, who had several outstanding warrants for his arrest.
Detective Whiting spotted Perry leaving the bank and heading towards a nearby Mobil gas station.
When Officer D. Brooks approached him, Perry fled on foot, prompting a pursuit.
He ran through multiple businesses before officers caught up with him behind a realty building on Thompson Road.
A brief struggle occurred as Perry resisted arrest, but he was eventually subdued and handcuffed with the help of Sergeant Larochelle and Officers Donovan and Cedeno.
Officer Donovan returned to the bank to gather information and learned that Perry had tried to cash a check for $2,845.89 made out to him by a company.
An employee, recognizing that such transactions were unusual for the business, confirmed with the company that they had not issued a check to Perry nor recognized his name.
Perry, 29, faces charges of uttering a false check, forgery of a check, disturbing the peace, and disorderly conduct.
Additionally, he had two outstanding warrants from Seekonk and Southborough for similar offenses.
