Driver airlifted after I-93 crash in Salem

SALEM — A driver was airlifted with life-threatening injuries after a serious crash on Interstate 93 south in Salem late Wednesday night.

State Troopers from Troop B barracks responded to the crash site near mile marker 1.4 at about 10:35 p.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle accident involving serious injuries.

Upon arrival, they discovered a 2016 white Lexus IS-300 that had veered off the road and was split in half following impact with several trees.

The driver, identified as Fredi Lopez De Leon, 22, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, was found to have been traveling northbound at a high rate of speed before the crash occurred.

Emergency personnel from the Salem Fire Department worked to free Lopez De Leon from the wreckage.

Once extracted, Lopez De Leon was rushed to the Salem High School field complex where a medical helicopter transported him to a Boston hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Assistance at the scene was provided by the Salem Police Department, Salem Fire Department, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

For the duration of the on-scene investigation, a travel lane on I-93 was closed for approximately two hours.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
