Cumberland man dies after pedestrian-vehicle collision

CUMBERLAND — A 24-year-old man struck by a car while crossing the street has died, the Cumberland Police Department reported Wednesday.

Joseph Arribas, of Cumberland, was crossing Highland Corporate Drive near the crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle exiting Route 99 onto Highland Corporate Drive at approximately 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation, according to officials.

Emergency responders from Cumberland Emergency Medical Services attended to Arribas at the scene before transporting him to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.

Despite the medical efforts, Arribas succumbed to his injuries overnight.

The Cumberland Police Department is conducting an investigation with accident reconstruction officers and detectives to determine the dynamics of the crash.

Further comments regarding the investigation will be withheld until it is complete.

Chief Matthew J. Benson expressed his sympathies, stating, “On behalf of the Cumberland Police Department, I offer my deepest condolences to Mr. Arribas’ family, friends, and loved ones.” He also commended the EMS personnel for their attempt to save Arribas’s life.

The police department asks anyone with information about the crash to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
