Charlton woman charged with reckless homicide after fatal crash

CHARLTON — A two-vehicle collision on Southbridge Road has resulted in the death of a Southbridge woman and serious injuries to several others, according to the Charlton Police Department.

At about 8:56 p.m. on Sept. 21, police were called to the scene near Carpenter Hill Road, where they found a 2015 Mercedes CLA and a 2005 Honda Civic with significant damage.

The Mercedes, driven by a 26-year-old Charlton woman, had reportedly crossed the center line and collided head-on with the Honda.

The 51-year-old female driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene.

Passengers in her vehicle were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The Mercedes driver was also hospitalized.

Following a preliminary investigation, authorities arrested the Charlton woman on Sept. 22.

She faces charges including Reckless Homicide by Motor Vehicle, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and a Marked Lanes violation.

She was arraigned on Sept. 23 at Dudley District Court.

Emergency crews from Charlton and Southbridge Fire Departments provided aid, including extricating victims from the wreckage.

The ongoing investigation involves the Charlton Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit-Worcester, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the CEMLEC Crash Reconstruction Unit.
