Yarmouth police warn against donation scams involving mailbox cash drops

1 min read

YARMOUTH — Yarmouth Police Department has issued a warning to residents about a recent spate of scams, including one involving requests for cash donations to be left taped to mailbox doors.

According to authorities, individuals claiming to be from the Massachusetts Fraternal Order of Police have been contacting residents, soliciting donations and promising “Thin Blue Line” stickers in return.

A recent incident involved a resident who was instructed to tape money to the front door of their mailbox for collection.

However, when a man arrived to collect the donation and found no money, he reportedly became agitated.

Police urge the community not to tape money to their mailboxes or donate via gift cards.

They advise residents to be skeptical of too-good-to-be-true offers and to thoroughly research organizations before donating.

An internet search can be instrumental in verifying the legitimacy of an organization.

The Yarmouth Police recommend contacting an organization directly through the phone number listed on their official website to confirm they are legitimate.

Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to a scam is urged to contact the Yarmouth Police dispatch center at 508-775-0445 for assistance.
