NORWELL — A juvenile’s SnapChat post suggesting a school shooting was meant as a joke, according to a statement released by the Norwell Police Department after an FBI agent flagged the concerning social media activity on Wednesday evening.

The post, discovered at 6:59 p.m. on Sept. 18, displayed an image of the juvenile with the message, “yk what Im shooting up the school.” Norwell police officers quickly responded to the juvenile’s home to conduct an investigation.

The juvenile, whose identity has not been released due to their age, admitted to creating the SnapChat post and sharing it on a private story.

They claimed the statement was intended to be humorous.

No students had reported the post to the police.

Authorities have found no evidence that the juvenile has access to weapons or lives with anyone who owns weapons, leading them to believe there is no credible threat to Norwell at this time.

Despite this, Police Chief Lee has ordered an increase in police patrols at all local schools and the surrounding areas as a precaution.

The investigation remains active, with detectives and officers conducting follow-up interviews.

The Norwell Police Department has pledged to keep the community informed as more information becomes available.
