St. Johnsbury man arrested on warrant, faces theft and trespass charges

ST. JOHNSBURY — A local man was arrested on an active warrant and is facing charges for retail theft and unlawful trespass, according to the St. Johnsbury Police Department.

George E. Phelps, 42, of St. Johnsbury, was taken into custody without incident on Sept. 18 after being located by patrolling officers.

Phelps had an outstanding warrant and was lodged at the Northeast Correctional Facility for lack of $500 bail.

The arrest followed an incident on Sept. 13, where Phelps was caught on camera shoplifting from a local convenience store.

He has been cited to appear in Caledonia court on Oct. 21 to face the charges stemming from this incident.

Phelps is scheduled for a court appearance on Sept. 19 related to the arrest warrant.

The St. Johnsbury Police Department has not released further details regarding the nature of the warrant or the items stolen during the theft.
