NEW BEDFORD — A juvenile male was arrested on firearm possession charges following a foot pursuit by local detectives on Sept. 16.

At approximately 6 p.m., detectives were surveilling the area near County St. and Austin St., a neighborhood that has experienced several recent shootings.

A young man, already known to law enforcement, started running from the scene after making eye contact with the officers.

The detectives observed him trying to dispose of an object from his waistband.

The suspect fled west on Studley St. and proceeded to jump over a fence from a driveway onto Hazard St. Detective George Coto apprehended the juvenile a short distance away, with Officer Mark Raposo finding a discarded Taurus G2C handgun, loaded with 10 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, underneath a vehicle in the driveway.

The juvenile is now facing charges for carrying a loaded high-capacity firearm without a license, possession of ammunition, and trespassing.

Detective Nathaniel Almeida made the arrest.

The New Bedford Police Department is encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward.
