NEWBURYPORT — Police Lt. Matt Simons announced Tuesday that the Newburyport Police Department has deemed a potential threat against Nock Middle School made via Snapchat as not credible after thorough investigation.
The Newburyport Police received a report on Monday, Sept. 16, at about 7:30 p.m., concerning a threatening message suggesting a student planned to bring a firearm to school.
The department, treating the matter with utmost seriousness, immediately launched an investigation in collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police Fusion Center and the FBI.
The inquiry established that the Snapchat threat did not originate from any student within the Newburyport School system.
Furthermore, investigators found no evidence supporting the threat’s credibility or any means to carry it out.
Throughout the investigation, the police maintained close communication with the school department.
The threat report and subsequent investigation took place after school hours, ensuring no immediate risk to students or staff.
In response to community concern, police officers were stationed in and around the schools on Tuesday morning and will continue to be present daily.
The police department is still investigating the incident.
The Newburyport Police Department emphasizes the importance of community cooperation to ensure children’s safety and applauds the individual who reported the threat.
