Waltham police increase school patrols after online threat

WALTHAM — The Waltham Police Department has heightened security at all local schools Monday following an online threat made against McDevitt Middle School over the weekend.

Authorities are collaborating with federal law enforcement to investigate the threat, with Police Chief Kevin E.

O’Connell and Deputy Chief Steven R. Champeon leading the response efforts.

The police have not released further details about the ongoing investigation.

In light of the threat, rumors of potential shootings at other educational institutions have circulated among students on social media, causing widespread concern.

The police confirmed that no additional direct threats have been identified at this time.

To ensure safety, the department has deployed additional officers at McDevitt Middle School and schools throughout the district, including Waltham High School.

School Resource Officers will be stationed on school grounds throughout the day, and patrols in the vicinity of schools will be stepped up.

This increased police presence is expected to continue for the rest of the week.
