Pittsfield police issue fraud alert after skimming device found at local Cumberland Farms

1 min read

PITTSFIELD — A skimming device was discovered at the Cumberland Farms on Dalton Avenue, prompting a fraud alert from the Pittsfield Police Department.

The device, used to capture credit and debit card information, was attached to the card machine at Register 1 inside the store.

The discovery in Pittsfield comes a day after Great Barrington Police announced finding a similar skimmer at another Cumberland Farms location.

The fraudulent device in Pittsfield is believed to have been placed on the morning of Sept. 4.

Police are advising anyone who used their card at this store from Sept. 4 until today to immediately contact their card provider to issue a new card.

Customers are also encouraged to review their account transactions for any suspicious activity.

Scammers often sell stolen card information on the black market, where it might not show suspicious activity for a period of time.

One indicator of card testing by scammers is charges of exactly $1.00, which are used to confirm the card’s validity.

Authorities recommend setting up immediate notifications for card transactions, a feature that can help detect fraudulent activity almost instantaneously.

The investigation is ongoing as police work to determine the extent of the breach and apprehend those responsible.
