South Boston traffic stop leads to firearm arrest

BOSTON — A routine traffic stop in South Boston led to the arrest of a Taunton man on multiple firearm charges Thursday night, police said.

Howard McCoy, 50, was arrested at about 8:11 p.m. after officers from District C-6 recovered a loaded firearm during a vehicle search, according to the Boston Police Department.

An officer on patrol observed a vehicle commit a marked lane violation on Columbia Road.

After stopping the vehicle near Dorchester Street and Old Colony Avenue, the officer discovered the vehicle’s registration was revoked.

During an inventory search prior to towing, police found a Smith & Wesson MP9 firearm with one round in the chamber and eight rounds in the magazine.

The weapon was later determined to be stolen.

McCoy faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, improper storage of a firearm, receiving stolen property, and possession of a Class E substance.

He is expected to be arraigned in South Boston District Court.
