NEWPORT — Four people were injured Friday morning in a two-car crash that caused one vehicle to roll over at the intersection of Short Bluff Road and Union Street, authorities said.

At approximately 8:02 a.m., Newport Police responded to reports of a collision involving a black Nissan Rogue and a white GMC Terrain. Officers arriving at the scene found the Nissan Rogue overturned on its driver’s side and the GMC Terrain with apparent collision damage.

An investigation determined that the driver of the Nissan Rogue was traveling west on Short Bluff Road and had stopped at the intersection before proceeding. As the Nissan entered the intersection, it collided with the GMC Terrain, which struck the Nissan’s front bumper and caused it to roll over, police said.

All four occupants were transported to North County Hospital with injuries believed to be minor, according to authorities.

“This incident could have been far worse if the people in the vehicles had not been wearing seatbelts,” Chief Travis Bingham said. “Incidents like these demonstrate how important it is to take safety precautions when operating a motor vehicle. I urge the community to wear their seatbelts and ensure passengers are also properly secured.”

Newport Police were assisted at the scene by the Newport City Fire Department, Newport Ambulance Services, and the Newport Public Works Department.
