Traffic stop for texting leads to drug trafficking arrest in Auburn

AUBURN — A routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug bust on Tuesday after an Auburn police officer pulled over a driver for texting behind the wheel.

Detective Sergeant Daniel Lamoreaux of the Auburn Police Department observed a Mercedes SUV crossing marked lanes while the driver was texting shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Upon stopping the vehicle, it was discovered to be unregistered.

Further investigation during the traffic stop led to a shocking discovery.

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Jose Luis Silva Moreno of Hubbardston, was found in possession of four kilogram-sized packages of cocaine and a substantial amount of cash.

Silva Moreno was arrested and charged with trafficking over 200 grams of a Class B substance – cocaine.

He was held overnight on $100,000 cash bail at the Auburn Police Department.

After appearing in court, his bail was reduced to $10,000 cash.
