LUNENBURG — The Lunenburg Police Department issued a scam alert to residents after receiving multiple reports of fraudulent phone calls from individuals claiming to be police officers soliciting donations.
Authorities emphasize that neither the Lunenburg Police Department nor any legitimate law enforcement agency will call individuals to ask for donations.
While some organizations that support police services may conduct phone campaigns, such practices have become increasingly rare due to public skepticism about their legitimacy.
The department advises residents to be cautious when handling unsolicited calls and to refrain from providing personal information or granting remote access to computers.
They also warn that no credible organization will demand payments in gift cards or cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
Police are urging anyone who receives a suspicious call to report the incident to the Lunenburg Police Department to help prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.
