HINGHAM — A welfare check on Friday led to the arrest of two men after an AR-style rifle and ammunition were found hidden in the woods, prompting a nearby restaurant and senior residential community to shelter in place.
The incident began Sept. 6 at about 4 p.m. when Hingham Police Officers, responding to a request from Bridgewater Police, began a search for a man whose welfare was of concern and who was believed to be armed with a rifle.
The search area included the Quarry Restaurant and Linden Ponds, a senior residential community, which were both advised to shelter in place.
Assisted by Weymouth and Norwell Police, officers located the Bridgewater man near the search area and transported him to the hospital.
A second man from West Harwich was found in the Quarry parking lot near his truck, which contained a rifle ammunition container.
Police K9 units from Hingham and Norwell searched the wooded area near the parking lot, discovering two additional ammunition containers, two 30-round magazines, one 10-round magazine, and a 5.56 caliber AR-style rifle without serial numbers, also known as a ghost gun.
A Foxboro Police K9 specialized in firearm detection conducted a further search without finding any more weapons or ammunition.
Following an investigation, Scott M.
McCabe, 32, of Bridgewater, was arrested at South Shore Hospital and charged with multiple firearms-related offenses, including possession of a large capacity firearm and ammunition without an FID card.
Mark A. Cerundolo, 32, of West Harwich, faced charges including witness intimidation and trespassing.
McCabe was held on $15,000 cash bail at the Hingham Police station, while Cerundolo was released on $5,000 cash bail.
Both men were arraigned at Hingham District Court on Sept. 9, with a dangerousness hearing set for Sept. 12.
Additional charges against McCabe were filed by Bridgewater Police, and he will be arraigned in Brockton District Court at a later date.
