BPD Fugitive Unit apprehends suspect in Dorchester homicide

BOSTON — Boston Police Department’s Fugitive Unit, along with several other law enforcement agencies, arrested a suspect on Thursday night in connection with a fatal shooting in Dorchester last month.

At about 8:45 p.m., on Thursday, officers from the Boston Police Fugitive Unit, Massachusetts State Police, Brockton Police, and the U.S.

Marshals Service apprehended 28-year-old Joseph Ruggs of Dorchester in Brockton.

Ruggs was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for charges including Murder, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition Without an FID Card, Carrying a Firearm Without a License, and Discharging a Firearm Within 500 feet of a Building.

The arrest stems from an incident on Saturday, August 24, when officers assigned to District C-11 in Dorchester were dispatched around 9:58 p.m. to the area of 159 Washington Street following reports of a person shot.

Upon arrival, they found an adult male victim with gunshot wounds.

The victim, later identified as 38-year-old Jashun Cooley of Roxbury, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was subsequently pronounced dead.

The Boston Neighborhood Trauma Team (NTT) is offering free and private support for community members dealing with the emotional aftermath of this event.
