LAWRENCE — A 35-year-old Lawrence man has been arrested in connection with the death of Carol Flaz-Burgos, whose body was found in a wooded area near Kenoza Lake in Haverhill on Sunday evening.

Cristian Montero was taken into custody Sunday afternoon and charged with witness intimidation and misleading an investigation, Essex County District Attorney Paul F.

Tucker said at a press conference.

Flaz-Burgos, 37, a mother of two, was reported missing on Aug. 31.

Her body was discovered by a Massachusetts State Police trooper with a K-9 and Airwing unit.

Tucker said he expects the charges against Montero to be upgraded to murder once the medical examiner completes an autopsy in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Lawrence Police Chief Melix Bonilla expressed condolences to the family, saying, “This is not the outcome that we were looking for and we are sad for this loss.”

Montero, who lived in the same building as Flaz-Burgos, was arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court and held without bail.

He is scheduled to return to court at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 for a detention hearing.

The investigation involved Lawrence Police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to Tucker’s office, Haverhill Police, and Methuen Police.
