Boston man arrested on firearm charges after stolen bike investigation

BOSTON — Police arrested a 46-year-old Boston man on multiple charges Wednesday after recovering a stolen firearm during an investigation into a stolen electric bicycle.

At about 8:15 p.m., officers assigned to the South End district were approached by a victim reporting a stolen e-bike near Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard.

Officers spotted a man riding the stolen bike across the street and detained him.

A search of the suspect’s backpack revealed a firearm later identified as a stolen Smith & Wesson MP Shield with 10 rounds in the magazine.

Officers also found a plastic bag containing suspected fentanyl.

Edison Johnson was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, two counts of receiving stolen property and possession of a Class A substance.

Johnson also had three active arrest warrants.

The stolen e-bike was returned to its owner.

Johnson is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.

The date of the arraignment was not immediately available.
