1 min read

CARVER — Police are warning residents about a new email scam threatening to expose personal information unless victims pay $2,000 in Bitcoin.

The Carver Police Department said Monday that scammers are sending emails claiming to have infected computers with a virus and gained control of cell phones and other devices.

The fraudulent messages threaten to release allegedly inappropriate content found on personal devices unless payment is made.

Victims are instructed to scan a QR code to make the Bitcoin payment and “wipe the slate clean,” according to police.

Authorities advise residents not to engage with these emails or click any links.

Anyone receiving such messages should contact the Carver Police Department at 508-866-2000.

Police urge the public to remain vigilant and protect personal information from scammers.
