New Bedford man arrested on firearm, drug charges after observed transaction

NEW BEDFORD — Detectives seized a gun and arrested a man for drug-related offenses after witnessing a narcotics exchange late Tuesday night on Acushnet Avenue near Deane Street.

Jacob Matthew-Almeida, 26, of 104 Peckham Street Apt. #2, was apprehended following the transaction.

Officers found him in possession of crack cocaine, a digital scale, and a loaded .45 caliber Sig Sauer P250 firearm tucked in a black fanny pack.

Additionally, $197 in cash was seized due to the nature of the charges against him.

Matthew-Almeida faces multiple serious charges including possession of a large-capacity firearm and ammunition without a license, distribution of crack cocaine, and conspiracy to violate the controlled substance laws.

His criminal history includes previous convictions for assault and battery, resisting arrest, and malicious destruction of property.

He currently has six open cases in New Bedford District Court.

The woman involved in the transaction, identified as Tatiana Irizarry, 31, of 56 Acorn Street, was charged with possession of crack cocaine and conspiracy.

Detective Emily Pacheco was the arresting officer.
