Chelsea officer seriously injured, suspect in custody after domestic disturbance

CHELSEA — A Chelsea police officer was seriously injured this afternoon while responding to a domestic incident on Shurtleff Street, according to the Chelsea Police Department.

At around 2:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to 207 Shurtleff Street following reports of a domestic disturbance.

A highly volatile situation awaited the responding officers, and during the engagement, one officer was attacked and part of their ear was bitten off.

The injured officer received first aid on the scene and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for further treatment.

The officer is currently in stable condition but will need additional medical care.

Carlos Daniel Sanabria, the suspect involved in the attack, has been taken into custody.

Sanabria, born on July 12, 1997, is awaiting charges as the investigation progresses.

Chief Keith E. Houghton reflected on the incident, saying, “This is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every day. We are grateful that the injuries, while serious, were not life-threatening. Our thoughts are with the officer and his family as he recovers.”

The Chelsea Police Department reassures the community that it remains dedicated to the safety of its officers and the public at large.
