CANDIA — A car veered off a bridge into a body of water near Raymond Road and Island Road last night, prompting a quick response from Candia Fire Rescue, officials said.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. when the vehicle reportedly crossed into the opposite lane, rode up onto the guardrail, and rolled into the water, causing significant damage including a ruptured gas tank.

Candia Fire Rescue was dispatched, sending Ambulance 2 and Engine 2 to the scene.

Initial reports indicated there was an occupant standing on top of the vehicle.

Upon arrival, crews found that the individual had already been helped out of the water and was seated in a passerby’s vehicle, which had reported the accident.

Emergency medical services evaluated the individual at the scene, but the person was not transported to a hospital.

There were no other occupants in the car at the time of the crash.

Rescue teams entered the water to facilitate the removal of the vehicle and to mitigate the environmental hazard posed by leaking fluids.

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services has been notified and is expected to assess the area this morning for further action.
