MIDDLETOWN — Two former daycare teachers face multiple charges after an investigation revealed alleged mistreatment of 2-year-old children at a Middletown early learning center, police said Thursday.

Kristie Kovarcik, 48, and Onima Rahman, 32, both former employees of Town & Country Early Learning Center, were arrested following a months-long investigation by the Middletown Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit.

The investigation, which began Jan. 12, initially focused on an assault allegation involving a 2-year-old child under Kovarcik’s care.

Further review of surveillance footage uncovered several instances of both Kovarcik and Rahman allegedly mishandling other 2-year-olds at the facility.

Rahman was arrested by warrant on Aug. 22 and charged with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree reckless endangerment.

She appeared in Middlesex Superior Court the same day.

Kovarcik turned herself in to Middletown Police on Aug. 30.

She faces three counts each of risk of injury to a minor and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Kovarcik was held on $30,000 bond and presented in Middlesex Superior Court on Aug. 30.

The daycare center is located at 195 South Main Street in Middletown.
