SPRINGFIELD — A man was arrested Wednesday on charges related to the 2022 fatal shooting of a Springfield resident, authorities said.

Paul Lachapelle Jr., 28, of Littleton, New Hampshire, faces first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder charges in the death of Justin Gilliam, 38, who was found dead on Greeley Road on June 6, 2022.

Vermont State Police obtained a warrant for Lachapelle’s arrest on Friday, and he was apprehended by New Hampshire State Police in Lisbon on Aug. 28 as a fugitive from justice.

At the time of the homicide, Lachapelle resided in Springfield.

He is currently held in jail and is expected to appear in court in New Hampshire on Thursday.

Investigators believe the murder stemmed from a dispute involving illegal drug trafficking.

Lachapelle will be extradited to Vermont to face charges at the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in White River Junction.

Further details will be released by New Hampshire State Police following Lachapelle’s initial court appearance.
