WEATHERSFIELD — A Windham County Sheriff’s Office cruiser was damaged during an emergency stop on Interstate 91 while transporting a prisoner on Aug. 27.
The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when a prisoner in transit from the Southern State Correctional Facility to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility claimed to have self-inflicted a neck injury with a metal hook.
First Sergeant Robert Lakin, the deputy in charge of the transport, attempted a U-turn on the interstate to provide first aid.
During the maneuver, the cruiser hydroplaned due to wet conditions and slid into the median, where it sustained undercarriage damage from an object.
Despite the prisoner’s claim, no visible injury was found upon administering first aid.
The prisoner was transported by Golden Cross Ambulance to Springfield ER and, after a medical evaluation, was cleared with no injuries.
Subsequently, the prisoner was returned to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Center in a separate vehicle.
The damaged sheriff’s cruiser was towed from the scene, and Sgt. Lakin was reported to be uninjured.
Assistance at the scene was provided by the Windsor County Sheriff’s Office and Golden Cross Ambulance.
