Watertown police warn of phone scam demanding Bitcoin payments

1 min read

WATERTOWN — The Watertown Police Department is alerting the public to a sophisticated phone scam after a resident was targeted by fraudsters claiming to represent law enforcement.

According to authorities, the scam involved a call from a number that appeared to be the Watertown Police Department’s official line (860-945-5200).

The caller falsely informed the resident of an ongoing money laundering investigation and demanded payment via a Bitcoin ATM to resolve the matter.

Officials emphasized that no legitimate law enforcement or government agency would ask for payments through Bitcoin, gift cards, or cash.

They also warned that scammers could easily “spoof” phone numbers and email addresses to appear trustworthy, and typically use intimidation and urgency to pressure victims into complying.

The Watertown Police Department advised residents to take time when making decisions, especially those involving money transfers.

They encouraged anyone who receives such calls to contact them before sending any funds.

The department remains available 24 hours a day to assist with concerns and inquiries.

Residents are urged to share this warning with family and friends, particularly those who may not have access to this notice.

The police remind the community: Don’t rush into decisions, gift cards are meant for gifting, and Bitcoin and other virtual currencies are non-refundable.
