Man arrested for burglary in Wells

WELLS — A New York man was taken into custody on suspicion of burglary at a Wells residence under construction, Vermont State Police reported Monday.

Troopers from the Rutland Barracks responded to a call at approximately 4:55 p.m. on Aug. 18 about a suspicious male at Cones Point Store in Poultney, who was reportedly yelling inside the establishment.

Concerned citizens followed the man, later identified as 37-year-old Peter Marshall of Granville, New York, as he headed south on Vt Route 30.

Witnesses observed Marshall on the deck of a private residence that was currently under construction and feared he might be attempting a break-in.

They promptly reported the incident to authorities.

Marshall was located by troopers south of the residence.

The subsequent investigation revealed that Marshall had unlawfully entered the property with the intention of stealing tools.

Marshall was arrested and transported to the Rutland State Police Barracks.

He has been issued a citation to appear in the Vermont Superior Court Rutland Criminal Division on Sept. 30 at 10 a.m.

The homeowner, 46-year-old Richard Hulett of Pawlet, was identified as the victim in the incident.
