WILBRAHAM — A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton for areas in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut, including parts of Hampden County, Western Tolland County, and Northern Hartford County, effective until 2:15 p.m. EDT on Aug. 26.
The warning, which was announced following the detection of a severe thunderstorm near Blandford, approximately 13 miles west of Westfield, moving southeast at 25 mph, cites hazards such as 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.
The storm, as indicated by radar, could cause significant hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to trees and power lines.
Residents in the affected areas, which include Hartford, New Britain, West Hartford, Manchester, and several other localities, are advised to seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
With the storm producing large hail, damaging winds, and continuous cloud-to-ground lightning, individuals are warned to stay indoors.
The National Weather Service reminds that lightning is a leading cause of weather-related fatalities and that the sound of thunder is a clear indication of proximity to a potential lightning strike.
Additionally, heavy rainfall has been accompanying the storm, raising concerns about flash flooding.
Authorities urge drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roadways.
Residents in the impacted areas are advised to stay tuned to local news outlets and weather channels for further updates on the storm’s progression and any additional safety instructions.
