GORHAM — A motor vehicle crash involving a Ford F750 loaded with crushed gravel led to the collapse of a covered bridge in Gorham on Aug. 23, injuring the driver and prompting a structural investigation, authorities said.

The Gorham Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene on Hurricane Road at approximately 12:45 p.m. after the vehicle, operated by Joshua Polewarzyk, 37, of Limington, caused the wooden floor of the bridge to give way due to the vehicle’s excessive weight.

The truck fell into the river below.

Polewarzyk managed to self-extricate and suffered only minor injuries, according to Deputy Chief Michael Nault’s report.

Maine Department of Transportation officials are evaluating the bridge’s structural integrity, and it remains unclear when the bridge will reopen.

The Gorham Police Department and the Maine State Police Commercial Division are investigating the crash.

Witnesses are urged to contact Sergeant Ted Hatch of the Gorham Police Department at 222-1660 X 1.
