WHITINGHAM — In a developing story, Vermont State Police confirmed that a kayak believed to belong to Matthew Houskeeper, a 59-year-old man from Bennington, was discovered by two fishermen on the Sherman Reservoir on Thursday, Aug. 15.

Houskeeper was reported missing on Aug. 14, after he failed to return from what was presumed to be a kayaking trip.

The fishermen, who found the blue and white kayak the day after Houskeeper’s disappearance, initially took it ashore, thinking it was abandoned.

Upon realizing the potential link to the missing person case, they turned the kayak over to authorities on Friday, Aug. 23.

Law enforcement has announced that search efforts will continue over the next few days, though on a limited scale, around the Sherman Reservoir where the kayak was located.

The Vermont State Police is urging the public to come forward with any information related to Houskeeper or the kayak.

Anyone who may have seen Houskeeper or the kayak in question is encouraged to contact the Westminster Barracks at 802-722-4600.
