AUBURN — A New York woman was arrested Thursday after trying to withdraw $7,000 from a bank account that wasn’t hers and assaulting a police officer who responded to the scene, authorities said.

Auburn police received a call from bank employees at 2:35 p.m. about a woman attempting a fraudulent transaction.

The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Maria Giuttari of Monroe, had reportedly tried the same scheme at another Massachusetts bank earlier in the day.

Detective Keith Chipman arrived at the bank to confront Giuttari, who became uncooperative and tried to flee.

She kicked Chipman in the upper leg and resisted arrest while yelling profanities, according to police reports.

Upon her arrest, officers found approximately 2 grams of crack cocaine and a smoking pipe in Giuttari’s purse, along with a fake Florida driver’s license bearing the victim’s information.

Giuttari was charged with identity theft, forgery, uttering a fraudulent bank note, attempted larceny by false pretenses, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and possession of a Class B controlled substance.

She was held at the Auburn Police Department on a $25,000 bail and arraigned in Worcester District Court on Friday.
