WOOLWICH — A two-vehicle head-on collision claimed the life of a Pennsylvania woman and seriously injured a Maine man late last night on U.S. Route 1 near Shaw Road.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the crash at 9:08 p.m. after a 2013 Buick Encore, driven by 24-year-old Margaret J.

Daniel of Lewisburg, PA, attempted to pass multiple vehicles while heading north.

Daniel’s vehicle collided with a southbound 2013 Chrysler 300, operated by 28-year-old Colby Brown of Old Orchard Beach.

Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene due to extensive injuries.

Brown, who had to be extricated from his vehicle by emergency services, was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he is being treated for multiple broken bones.

His injuries, while serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.

Witnesses reported to investigators that Daniel was passing several vehicles at the time of the collision, and speed is being considered a contributing factor in the crash.

Deputy Ryan Camarda is leading the investigation, with Detective Brian Carlton reconstructing the accident.

Woolwich Fire/Rescue provided emergency medical services and the Bath Police Department assisted with traffic control.

U.S. Route 1 was closed for approximately four hours and reopened at 1:00 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office has not released any further details as the investigation is ongoing.
