SOMERSET — Somerset Police Department is alerting iPhone users to a new phishing scam aimed at stealing Apple IDs through deceptive text messages masquerading as official Apple communications.
According to authorities, the scam begins with an unsolicited text message purporting to be an urgent iCloud request from Apple.
The message includes a link that prompts recipients to sign into their accounts.
However, clicking the link directs them to an illegitimate website that closely resembles Apple’s real login page.
When users input their credentials, the scammers capture the information.
To avoid falling prey to this scam, the police department advises iPhone users to exercise caution with text messages asking them to follow links, even if they appear to be from trusted sources.
It is safer to directly navigate to the Apple website or use the official app for any account sign-in activities.
Additionally, Apple will not request passwords or personal details via text messages.
For enhanced security, users are encouraged to enable multi-factor authentication on their Apple IDs, ensure their phone’s software is always updated, and verify any suspicious messages by contacting Apple directly.
The police are urging the community to share this information with friends and family to help protect them from becoming victims of this scam.
