DOVER — The Dover Police Department issued a community advisory regarding the euthanization of wild animals in the Forest Street/Portland Ave area after five such incidents over the past three weeks.
The animals, which included skunks, raccoons, and foxes, were put down due to signs of illness, although the specific diseases they may have carried are currently unknown.
Authorities noted that none of the euthanized animals had contact with humans, and therefore, they were not tested for rabies.
However, the behavior of the animals prior to their euthanization raised concerns that they might have been suffering from rabies, distemper, or another illness.
In response to these events, the Dover Police Department is urging residents, particularly those in the affected neighborhood, to exercise caution.
They advise monitoring children and pets closely to prevent any contact with wild animals.
If residents encounter an injured or sick animal, they are instructed not to approach it and to instead contact the Dover Police Department for assistance.
The advisory aims to prevent any potential health risks to the community.
