BOSTON — Boston Police Department officers arrested an 18-year-old suspect on firearm charges Tuesday evening after responding to a disturbance involving a stolen moped and the recovery of a loaded gun with an obliterated serial number.

At about 5:29 p.m., officers from District C-11 in Dorchester arrived at the intersection of Arcadia Park and Ditson Street.

They had been dispatched following a report of an altercation and were informed by Boston Police Operations that a moped had been stolen and the suspect was being detained by civilians.

Upon arrival, the officers were met by a group of individuals who alerted them to the suspect’s possession of a firearm.

The suspect, identified as Jayden Romao of Boston, was promptly handcuffed by the officers and led to a side yard where the discarded firearm was recovered.

According to witnesses, the group had tracked down the stolen moped to the location and confronted Romao, who then reached toward his waistband.

The group managed to restrain him and called 911 for assistance.

The recovered weapon, a Taurus 6×4, was found to be loaded with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine, which had a capacity for thirteen rounds.

Notably, the firearm’s serial number had been defaced.

Romao faces charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, and Defacement of a Firearm Serial Number.

He is expected to stand trial in Dorchester District Court.
