COVENTRY — An elderly woman was abducted from her home in Coventry, Rhode Island, leading to a high-speed police chase and the arrest of a suspect, authorities said.
The Coventry Police Department, responding to a tip from the Smithfield Police Department, investigated a potential kidnapping at a local residence on Aug. 18 at 8:19 a.m. The 80-year-old female victim was later located in Smithfield.
Steven Henning was identified as the suspect. After a pursuit, Henning was apprehended by Providence Police.
Following an interview conducted by Coventry Police Detectives, Providence Police, and officials from the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, Henning faced multiple charges, including Kidnapping, Assault with a Deadly Weapon in a Dwelling, 1st Degree Robbery, Assault on a Person over 60-Serious Bodily Injury, Burglary, and Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.
The victim is currently receiving care at a local hospital.
Henning is set to be arraigned at the Kent County Courthouse on Aug. 19.
Additional charges are expected from other jurisdictions, including Burrillville and Smithfield.
As the investigation continues, no further details, such as the victim’s name or address, have been released to protect the victim’s privacy.
