Heavy rainfall triggers flooding, road closures in Ansonia

1 min read

ANSONIA — After a deluge on August 18 led to widespread flooding and road closures, Ansonia residents are facing continued disruptions as emergency crews work to manage the aftermath.

Significant rainfall caused the Naugatuck River to swell, prompting the precautionary closure of flood gates and halting Metro North train travel on the line.

Several roads, including Wakelee Avenue and Franklin Street, were closed on the evening of the flooding event.

Furthermore, the collapse of a retaining wall behind Assumption Church and School on North Main Street resulted in additional street closures and detours.

The Ansonia Police Department, along with the Fire Department and Public Works, responded to the critical areas to address the flood damage.

The city’s Emergency Operations Center was activated to oversee the situation.

By August 19, the river levels had dropped sufficiently to allow for the reopening of the flood gates.

However, North Main Street remains closed between Main Street and Fourth Street, as of 10 a.m., and train service has yet to be restored.

Assumption Church and School continue operations, albeit with limited access to a section of the rear parking lot for safety precautions.

City officials will continue to provide updates as they work to fully reopen all roads and resume rail services.
