CANDIA — Three people were killed in a multi-vehicle accident on Route 101 in Candia, New Hampshire State Police reported.
The incident, which occurred around 12:20 p.m. on Aug. 17, began when the driver of a 2010 Toyota Tundra, traveling eastbound at a high speed, side-swiped a 2018 Nissan Sentra.
The Tundra then hit a guardrail, crossed the median into the westbound lanes, and collided head-on with a 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
State Troopers from Troop A barracks arrived at the scene following reports of the head-on collision.
They confirmed that the drivers of the Toyota Tundra and Jeep Grand Wagoneer were pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the Jeep was transported to Elliot Hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.
The occupants of the Nissan Sentra, Timothy McMahon, 57, and Kelly McMahon, 18, from Peterborough, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to Elliot Hospital as a precaution.
Authorities have withheld the identities of the deceased pending family notification.
Following the crash, Route 101’s westbound and eastbound lanes were temporarily closed.
Traffic was rerouted, allowing eastbound lanes to be reopened, but the westbound lanes remained closed for about four hours for investigation.
The New Hampshire State Police received assistance from Raymond Police Department, Auburn Police Department, Candia Fire Rescue, Raymond Fire Department, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
Preliminary investigations suggest speed was a contributing factor, but further inquiries are underway.
